Denial is Not a River in Egypt
Why
do people do things that are bad for them? Why do they continue to act in self
defeating ways day after day? Why do people continue to drink after getting a
DWI? Why do people have a car accident while they are under the influence and
then fix their car and do it again the next week? Why do people come to work
after drinking or using drugs when they know they may be tested at work?
The reason is DENIAL! We all have it and some of us have bigger doses of it than
others. Chemical abuse leads to brain damage and impairment that leads to the
development of the psychological defense of denial. The physical basis for
denial is well established in the field of chemical dependency counseling. We
have been evaluating and treating alcohol and drug abuse for years and we
encounter denial on a daily basis in our professional activities. For this
reason, the staff at Baxter Assistance Services understands denial and the negative impact
that it can have upon the honesty and integrity and believability of the
employee who use it on a daily basis.
The employee can come to work with obvious signs of being under the influence of
alcohol and/or drugs and yet they will deny it to everyone. Can you afford to
take the risk of having an impaired employee out there. As an employee, can you
afford to risk losing your job over a couple of cans of beer?
The denial does not stop at work. It occurs at home, with family members and
with friends and acquaintances. The person with the denial has what is commonly
known in the chemical dependency treatment field as "a sincere
delusion". In other words, if the person will just keep on believing the
lie the hope is that everyone else will join in and embrace the lie as well.
However, other people know that it is all a lie but will not confront the person
about their denial.
